By personal connections I mean the connecting of each bit (short story or joke) to actual events that happened in Ellen’s life. For example, when she first starts off, she says, “When I sat down to write this show…” This helps the audience trust and feel confident in what she’s telling them. It’s a way to establish a personal relationship with them because they feel as if she is telling the something really personal about herself and therefore, they can sympathize, or relate with her more easily and willingly.

Another way to strengthen their relationship is through the Real-life Connection.
