The reason why we have these strange hand poses is because there was a cat statue in the window stand of this Chinese store that I've realized you can't see in the photo. You may have seen this cat statue in many different Asian restaurants, and the reason why many places have it is because it a symbol of luck. Here's what the cat looks like:
