Back to Stanford University: Changing Lives Since 1891


Direction:

I plan on concentrating on Stanford as it relates to society and to its students. This will possibly include a brief delve into the physical layout of Stanford, but I would prefer to focus more on the the work that the institution performs as an idea, concept, culture, brand, etc. I would really like to compare how these aspects change in going from the "Stanford Bubble" to the outside world, probably exploring phenomena like "the S-bomb" and the duck pond syndrome.

What work does Stanford do to students, environment, and world? What work is done on Stanford by students and outside world?

How is Stanford like a machine?

View of Stanford as a gathering of relationships. (Thing in the sense of perfume jar)

Architecture as movement, ritual, performance, etc (see castle)

The Design of Stanford (teapot). Physical layout is part of it, but a large part of its design is the philosophical and resulting policy approaches to the challenges put to the university and it constituents.

Invention versus adoption (light bulb). Stanford was expected to fail on it start. Today it is one of the top universities in the nation.

Human factors design regarding physical layout, policy, staff provided, etc. (computer mouse)

Circuit of culture...how does it apply to Stanford

heterogenous networks and hybrid of forms that allow Stanford to exist

Emotional design and localization....use of dorm funds to shape community, newsletters, website, flag, etc...despite mass production of these phenomenon.



About the project

I will primarily be exploring the nature of the social interactions of Stanford students both on and off of the campus through phenomena such as the duck pond analogy/syndrome, dropping the "S-Bomb," dating, etc. The idea is illuminate how Stanford the institution, place, and culture affect and shape students' world views and interpersonal interactions. I plan on exploring this through my own experiences and tales, but would also like to include the stories and comments of others. Personal Experience -- living in a freshman dorm as a frosh, greek life, social scenes, living in a freshman dorm as an RA, university policy, involvement in organizations, etc
