Jennifer Anderson received her doctoral degree from Stanford University and is currently teaching at the University of California at Davis and San José State University. She has been studying Japanese tea ritual for more than twenty years and has been awarded junkyōju (the rank of assistant professor) at Urasenke, a four hundred year old tea lineage headquartered in Kyōto, Japan.
