CAVE (CAVE AUTOMATIC VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT)
developed by Tom DiFanti and Dan Sandin of the Electronic Visualisation Laboratory at the University of Illinois in Chicago as ‘a virtual reality theater’ (Sandin in Janko, Leopoldseder, Stocker, 1996: 85, emphasis added).

‘multi-person, room-sized, high-resolution, 3D video and audio environment. Graphics are rear projected in stereo onto three walls and the floor, and viewed with stereo glasses. As a viewer wearing a location sensor moves within its display boundaries, the correct perspective and stereo projections of the environment are updated, and the image moves with and surrounds the viewer’. (Sandin in Janko, Leopoldseder, Stocker, 1996: 84)

- the viewer uses a pair of lightweight polarised glasses.

- a lead visitor can guide a group through a position-sensing device while an interactive wand, a kind of 3D mouse, allows them to control the direction and movement.

- CAVE Concept: Dan Sandin. Date: 1996 The CAVE, one of the Ars Electronica Center most popular installations, is a cube measuring 3 x 3 x 3 meters. One side is open; the interior walls constitute its projection surfaces. 'In the CAVE, several individuals can simultaneously experience a virtual, three-dimensional world. The CAVE was developed at the Electronic Visualization Lab in Chicago. Ars Electronica Center continually invites artists to design new virtual worlds (i.e. applications) for the CAVE based upon their own artistic conceptions.' 'A virtual companion named Nem accompanies travelers along an adventurous path from an idealized Renaissance town to a futuristic Cybercity. In the process, "Multi Mega Book" subtly illustrates a bit of the history of media and culture: the way leading from the printed page to the electronic transmission of information. - Crayoland (Application), CAVE Application, Concept: Electronic Visualization Laboratory , Date: 1996A Charming Promenade. 'A land with all the charm of a child's crayon coloring invites visitors to come along for a stroll through forests and meadows. Special attraction: the beehive (with aggressive insects).'
