Through the Collaboratory, Performing Presence will evolve a series of documentations of workshops and working processes by key practitioners whose work engages with concepts and practices of presence. In the first instance, we will document:

6 workshops in 6 months In year one (2005-6), a series of public one-day practice-research workshops will explore theatrical practices that engage with performer-presence. Workshops will be conducted by leading theatre and performance artists based in the UK and hosted by Exeter University's Centre for Intermedia [link].

6 processes During the four years of Performing Presence (2005-9) evolving documentations of the development of work by six key artists will be created through the Collaboratory. These artists will be engaged with a wide range of technologies and forms, including video, multi-media performance, telepresence, the web, and new media installation.

Of course, the question of documentation is inseparable from the question of presence. In Performing Presence, then, our practices of documentation will themselves address the performance of presence. Here, questions around how to select, frame, juxtapose, record and represent – of how to speculate over what was – will be integral to our investigation.
